August Monthly Sport Wrapup
August was a cracker of a month! We were treated to the final rounds of the NRL, AFL, start of the EPL season plus two Bledisloe Cups. The Mayweather v McGregor fight was the cherry on top of it all!
But first, let’s start with the not so good news… The state of the Australian cricket team. After several months of arguments, the players and Cricket Australia finally agreed on a pay deal and sent our national team on a tour of Bangladesh. After a humiliating loss in the first test, the Aussies face dropping to 6th in the world if we lose the second test. It seems that perhaps the players should have spent more time in the nets and less time arguing for a pay rise.
With the NRL finals just around the corner, the makeup of the top 8 is yet to be finalised. The Broncos are definitely through but the Cowboys are relying on a few results to go their way. Otherwise, they risk falling out of the top 8.
After being embarrassed in the first Bledisloe, the Wallabies got off to a flying start in the second test. Unfortunately the ever-classy All Blacks fought their way back and pipped them at the post to wrap up the Bledisloe for the 15th straight year. Ouch.
The most anticipated fight of the year finally came to fruition on the last Sunday of August. Although the result was as anticipated, McGregor’s skill level came as a real surprise. He was composed for the first few rounds and landed several clean shots on Mayweather. As the fight wore on though, his lack of experience and match fitness became clear and Mayweather started picking him off slowly. The big decision now stands at who McGregor will fight next. Will he be happy fighting for the relative pittance he receives from the UFC? He surely has to defend his title when he returns to the UFC. This fight would be against either Tony Ferguson or Kevin Lee. It’s fair to say that neither opponent would be as popular as the third installment of the McGregor v Diaz showdown.
