July Monthly Sport Wrapup
What a month of sport that was! July got off to a cracker of a start with the Battle of Brisbane seeing our own Jeff Horn take on Manny Pacquiao. Horn came out swinging from the first round and he didn’t stop throwing punches. His hand was eventually raised as the victor, followed by a celebratory parade down Queen Street Mall. The fight was re-scored to confirm the result but debate still continues around the validity of the result.
July also saw the Super Rugby season wrap up. I think all Australian rugby fans have been left feeling incredibly flat after a horrendous season for our Super Rugby franchises. Not one Australian team won a game against a New Zealand side… Yikes. This doesn’t bode well for the Bledisloe matches in August! To add insult to injury, the ARU is yet to confirm which franchise is getting cut from the competition. This lack of decision has claimed its first victim with Sean McMahon signing a contract to play in Japan. This decision sees him effectively end his newly started Wallabies career.
From one rugby code to the next… July saw Queensland extend its dominance over New South Wales once again. It’s fair to say that if the Blues were ever going to beat Queensland in a decider at Suncorp, 2017 would be the year. Was it the hour-long Jonathon Thurston love-fest? Or was it Bernard Fanning serenading our retiring immortal? Whatever it was, the Queenslanders came out firing and never really looked back. As usual, our friends south of the border instantly started tearing the team apart and looking for new combinations for 2018. It was clear from the three games that New South Wales were the better side for most of the series. But they seemed to drop the bundle before reaching the finishing line, and it cost them dearly.
The last major event for July was UFC 214 between Daniel Cormier v Jon Jones. For years, these two fighters have circled each other in one of UFC’s most long-standing feuds. On Sunday, Jones scored his second victory over his rival with a vicious high kick followed by some vicious ground and pound. A great way to see out a great month of sport!
